Steam Trips with Shay 6

Elkins to Kelley Mountain Tunnel
July 11th and 12th – Three Trips Each Day

Ride behind Western Maryland Shay 6 as it leaves the Elkins Depot and makes its way up the grade across the Tygart Valley River and the Route 219/250 Bridge, making it’s ascent up Kelley Mountain grade to the summit near the Western Portal of the tunnel. There the train will make a short stop for servicing before returning to Elkins. This is the same six mile round trip originally made by Cass Scenic Railroad Shay and Heisler geared locomotives in annual visits to the Mountain State Forest Festival over 30 years ago. Each trip will be about 90 minutes. There will be two morning trips and one late afternoon trip (departing at 6:00 PM) each day.

This four hour trip will follow the scenic Tygart Valley River and will be powered by Shay 6. Night Photo Sessions

Night photo sessions will be held at the Elkins Depot starting at about 8:30 PM on July 10th, 11th and 12th. The set ups will feature Shay 6 with a different diesel every night. We will use over 20,000 watts of quartz lights to provide spectacular photo opportunities. Bring your camera, tripod, and a cable release if appropriate. We will supply the lights and suggest exposure settings. The use of quartz lights will allow great results by videographers and digital, as well as traditional 35mm cameras.
